Forgotten, But Not Forsaken

Thought for the Day

Genesis 40:13-23

Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up your head, and restore thee unto thy place: and thou shalt deliver Pharaoh's cup into his hand, after the former manner when thou was his butler. (14) But think on me when it shall be well with thee, and shew kindness, I pray thee, unto me, and make mention of me unto Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house... (23) Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgot him.

Joseph served Pharaoh's butler with a sincere heart and with pure motives. His only request was that when things turned around for him that he would "remember" Joseph; in other words, that he would mention him and try to help him out of his difficult situation of being a prisoner for unjust reasons. Well, the day came as Joseph predicted and the butler was freed and restored to his position of prominence, but he "forgot" Joseph.

How many times do we reach out to help others, to show them some kindness and it is re-payed with ingratitude or even dismissed as not that big of a deal? Most of us have experienced this at one time or another. As parents, we experience it regularly with our kids. It seems that they can easily dismiss as ordinary or expected the tremendous sacrifices that we make for them daily. How about when it comes to our jobs; we put in the extra time and go the second mile to benefit our employers and yet these acts of sacrifice are overlooked.

If we are not careful, we can allow these "slights" to create in us an "I don't care attitude" and push us into a lifestyle of mediocrity. We must, as Joseph take these oversights in stride and realize that ultimately we may be forgotten by man, but we are not forsaken by God. Joseph spent several more years in that prison, but in God's perfect timing his consistency and service was noticed and appreciated. He was finally rewarded for his devotion and elevated to a position of great prominence.

Application

In this life, we may not be elevated to a position of prominence because of the sacrifices of service we make, but we are not overlooked by our Lord and we must realize that in Christ, "our labor is not in vain". It is seen; it is appreciated; and it is rewarded by God in His time. Even if that means in eternity. Go the second mile today. Re-dedicate yourself to a standard of quality and excellence that is pleasing to the Lord and serve others not for man's recognition, but for God's.

Genesis 28:10-17
And Jacob went out from Beersheba, and went toward Haran. (11) And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep. (12) And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it. (13) And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed; (14) And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed. Have you ever experienced the restlessness of God in your life? If you have then you full well understand the concept of your pillow being "a stone". No physical event or object can satisfy or bring solitude, even those things that are so typically depended upon. I think it is the mercy of God that brings us to the place of these restless times. They are not something we would seek or in any way desire. Jacob called it a "dreadful place"; but nonetheless, it was the "house of God". It was the place of God's choosing to meet with Him.

It is in these kind of times that God releases His vision for us, for our lives, for our future. Jacob was blessed with seeing the reality of the eternal, and God's plan to give Him a possession. And the best part of all was that the Lord would be with him every step of the way!

God has brought my life through many restless places, but during each one His presence has become clearer to me and more certain. Don't fight the restless times, don't try to assuage them with temporal comforts. Look to the Lord for expalnation and purpose as He unfolds His eternal vision for you.

Application

If you are experiencing unexplained restlessness in your life right now, consider for a moment that it may simply be God speaking. It may be His attempt to bring you to a point of desperation where only "He" makes sense. Seek Him today. Open your life up to Him completely and allow Him to reveal to you His chosen vision for your life. The Way Leads to Worship

Thought for the Day

Genesis 24:26-27
And the man bowed down his head, and worshipped the LORD. (27) And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of my master Abraham, who has not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth: I being in the way, the LORD led me to the house of my master's brethren.

"Being in the way, the Lord led Him." What a great thought that God's leadership in our lives is found by simply getting up each day and determining to do the right thing by Him. We speak of living for the glory of God; in practical terms this is just living to put a smile on His face. The servant of Abraham was "in the way"; he was in the path of pleasing his master when things fell in place for him. But don't ever think for a moment that God's purpose in leading us is to fulfill our willful bents. When the servant saw that his desires had been realized what did he do? He worshiped! Putting a smile on the face of God, worshiping Him, is our chief aim; it is our delight.

Application

Stop right now and commit your way to the Lord. Determine to put a smile on His face and then by faith, worship Him. Express your love for Him as inadequate as it may feel because he delights in the humble recognition of His lordship in our lives. Happy are... the Poor in Spirit

Thought for the Day

Matthew 5:3
Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

What? Being poor will make me happy? Not necessarily; the Lord is not saying here that there is happiness in physical poverty. As a matter of fact, I grew up pretty poor and would not say that it brought a whole lot of happiness to me. The arena of poverty to which the Lord is speaking is in the spirit. Poverty is defined as a deficiency of necessary or desirable ingredients to adequately sustain life. Jesus is telling us that it is only when we recognize the complete and utter deficiency of our heart apart from God's grace that we can truly experience the kingdom of God.

One person put it this way, "When we realize that Jesus is all we have, we discover that He is all we truly need." I think John the Baptist gave us the mission statement for being poor in spirit when he said of Jesus, "He must increase, but I must decrease." Right there lies the secret to the blessedness of being poor in spirit; it is only when we see that the answers and resources necessary for a blessed life are not in us, that we discover the true riches of God's wisdom and grace in Christ. Jesus said in John 15:5, "Without me you can do nothing." This is poorness in spirit - the recognition of Jesus as my all in all!

Application

Do you see yourself as nothing without Christ? If not, the happiness and peace of mind that you seek will continue to allude you until you take the burden off yourself that was never designed for you to carry, that of sustaining your own spirit. That is a Creator sized burden and we must relinquish it to His good hand.

Happy Are...

Thought for the Day
Matthew 5:1-3

(1) And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: (2) And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying, (3) Blessed are ...

Happiness is a commodity that is desired by all, but obtained by seemingly few. Today we have our views on what will bring happiness, and herein lies the problem in our hearts- God has a version of happiness and we have our own version of happiness and they are at odds with each other. Our own pursuit of happiness often leads to frustration and turmoil because we seek it on our own terms rather than our Lord's.

In the beatitudes Jesus lays out for all the true definition and path of happiness. The word blessed that Jesus used has the idea of inner happiness that comes from a self-emptying, God seeking, and others serving course of life. It can be found only in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

Application

We must come to the end of ourselves and yield to the all-wise plan of our God today to truly experience the life altering happiness that can come from Christ alone.

Christian Perfection

Matthew 5:43-48 You have heard that it has been said, You shall love your neighbor, and hate your enemy. (44) But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them who despitefully use you, and persecute you; (45) That you may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he makes his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. (46) For if you love them which love you, what reward have you? do not even the publicans the same? (47) And if you salute your brethren only, what do you more than others? do not even the publicans so? (48) Be therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

When we think of defining perfection or even someone trying to be perfect, we come away with a much different view of the subject than our Lord does. Most people view perfection in light of not making mistakes or elevating ourselves to a high level of appearance or performance. God places perfection here in the context of how we demonstrate His love to others including our enemies. We are to "be perfect" as "our Father in heaven is perfect". He does this by allowing His sun to shine and His rain to fall on the good and the bad. (v.45) Of course this does not mean that He overlooks sin and allows just anyone into Heaven, but it shows that His compassionate acts as the Creator toward His creation is not limited to just those who treat Him with the honor He is due. If our Father is willing to demonstrate such unbounded compassion, why not us? Why not me? Be perfect; treat others with the kindness the Lord has shown to you!

Application

Find that person who is getting on your last nerve today and show them kindness, not because they deserve it, but because this is what your Father does. This is true perfection!

Praying For Persecuted Christians In Iran

TEHRAN (AFP) - Iran has arrested a number of Christian missionaries in Tehran province and vowed to detain more of them, the provincial governor was quoted as saying by state news agency IRNA on Tuesday.

Morteza Tamaddon said "the leaders of this movement have been arrested in Tehran province and more will be arrested in the near future."

He did not give their identities, so it was unclear whether they are foreigners, Iranians or a combination of both.

Nor did he explain what he meant by their belonging to a movement, which he called "deviated" and "corrupt."

He referred to them as "tabshiri," or missionaries, and likened them to the Taliban.

"Just like the Taliban... who have inserted themselves into Islam like a parasite, they have crafted a movement with Britain's backing in the name of Christianity," Tamaddon said.

"But their conspiracy was unveiled quickly and the first blows were delivered to them," he added, without saying what they were allegedly conspiring to do.

"Various kinds of fake, deviated and corrupt cults have sharpened their teeth for our beliefs and one can see their activities among the youth," he said, branding Christian missionaries as an example of "cultural onslaught" against Iran.

Christianity is among the recognised religions in Iran but, under the country's Sharia-based law, renouncing Islam, or apostasy, is punishable by death.

However, some Christian converts have been jailed in recent years and media have reported several crackdowns on "home churches" in predominantly Shiite Muslim Iran.

Christians, Jews and Zoroastrian minorities are free to practise their religion but they are not allowed to proselytise, and their women have to observe the mandatory Islamic dress code in public.

The Lighted Path

Proverbs 4:18

(18) But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.

Several weeks ago Annabeth asked me why God makes us wait until we die to see Heaven. This is a very common thought for us humans. I often wish that the Lord would show me all the details of his plan for me all at once, but this is not the way He works. His plan is reveled gradually, like the way the lights on a car only illuminate what is immediately in front of me. It is as I move into the light that I have that more light is revealed. It shines "more and more" as I move closer to Him. Even when Israel was sent in to conquer the promised land, they were told that God would drive out their enemies from the land "little by little" (Ex 23:29, 30). He does not show us His plan all at once or we would probably become completely overwhelmed.

Application

Walk in the light that God has given you today. Find one thing in His Word to act on today and the next step will become increasingly apparent.

Tis the Season to NOT Grow Weary

Thought for the Day

Galatians 6:9-10

(9) And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

(10) As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

Does doing good ever wear you out? I know that in my life there are times when I feel so depleted that I just want to hide from people. Of course this is just an indication that my spiritual battery is running low and is in desperate need of a recharge. This is what the Apostle Paul is conveying to us in this passage. The Christian life is not a wind sprint; it is a marathon! The answer to fatigue is not to quit running the race, but to live with balance and regular times of drinking deeply from the well of God's Word that His grace may sustain us. Serving others is a basic tenet of our Christian Faith. It is not optional for a believer; it is the essence of being a believer! As my old pastor used to say, "I don't want to retire, I want to re-fire." Let's re-fire for Jesus this Christmas season!

Application

Be sure to take time today to come apart for some personal reflection with the Lord. The time spent in doing this will multiply the rest of your time today. God will be no man's debtor. Give to Him His due and He will repay you in abundance!

A Dwelling Place for God

Ephesians 2:19-22

(19) Now therefore you are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;

(20) And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;

(21) In whom all the building fitly framed together grows unto an holy temple in the Lord:

(22) In whom you also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

Its amazing to me how the Lord has assembled together so many different types of materials in order to build His church. As I look at our local church I see the diversity of age, styles, preferences, economic status, culture, and on and on, yet we are built together by God in order to be an appropriate dwelling place for Him. There is truly a bond in Christ that defies human wisdom. It is a shame that many churches do not reflect the unity of spirit that is perhaps the greatest witness of who Christ truly is. Our God delights in the unity of His people because it is a reflection of His essential character.

Application

Are you living in unity with those that you call your church family? Do all in your power today to resolve any conflict you may possess with others. Life is short, don't waste it! There is really no excuse for a divided church; this is a great tragedy because it portrays a distorted image of our God.

He Came For Me and You!

Luke 2:11

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.

So many times I hear people downplay the human side of the salvation experience. Of course we understand that ultimately all that God does is for His own glory, but if we are not careful we frame God as an austere impersonal God who has no emotional attachment to His will or the people he came to save. Jesus' coming was for us! It is "unto you" or "for you" that a Savior was born. God delights in doing things for us, not simply in a theological sense that tries to reconcile His sovereign glory with our human necessity, but in a very real, caring, and feeling way. Jesus came for us: Hallelujah, what a Savior!

Application

Has your view of God left Him distant and remote from your innermost needs and feelings. The Bible tells us otherwise. Come to Him today in childlike faith and humility and experience afresh the wonders of His love for you! Abba Father!

Christmas becomes so personal to me when I meditate on the truth that it was the coming of Jesus into this world in "the fullness of time" or at just the right moment that allows me to enjoy the Father- son relationship that I have with God. He is not a God that is far off or impersonal, but He is "Abba" or literally "Daddy". What a blessed privilege to know this great being in such a comfortable and personal way!

2 Chronicles 29:31

Then Hezekiah answered and said, Now ye have consecrated yourselves unto the LORD, come near and bring sacrifices and thank offerings into the house of the LORD. And the congregation brought in sacrifices and thank offerings; and as many as were of a free heart burnt offerings.

It seems fitting that the Christmas season follows right on the heels of Thanksgiving. When we get our focus right and begin to see the blessings in all that God has done for us and our heart is filled with gratitude, it generates a spirit of generosity. "For God so loved the world that He gave...." As thanksgiving is the season of praise and gratitude, Christmas is the season of generosity and giving.

The heart that has been freed through thankfulness will naturally give generously!

Application

Are you free to offer generously? Look for an opportunity today and throughout this Christmas season to give generously to a specific need.

The Privilege of Parenting

(3) Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.

(4) As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.

(5) Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.

Children get an awful bad rap in our society today. They are viewed as a burden and something that can be easily disposed of if the timing is just not right for us to be parents yet. We find all kinds of excuses to justify our selfishness, but the truth is that God views our children as gifts. He views them as His own heritage and something that we should highly value and treasure.

I am so blessed by the 15 babies that have been born to families in our church body over the past 12 months and there is one more on the way in March. What a privilege to be honored by God with such treasure. Along with the joys of parenthood also comes the challenges and burdens as well, but all for His glory and their good!

Application

Ask the Lord to give you the right perspective of the children in your life and see your opportunity to influence them as a sacred obligation to the Lord Himself. After all, they are His heritage!

Thanking Our Way To Peace Of Mind

Thought for the Day

Psalms 119:62

At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto thee because of thy righteous judgments.

We often hear of people staying up late because of worry or fear of uncertainties on the horizon of life, but for someone to get up simply to "give thanks" to the Lord is highly unusual. This is not something we commonly associate with late night activity. What would be the motive behind this?

There are several assumptions we could make, but to me what is clear is that giving thanks to God is simply good medicine. Perhaps it was the worries and fears that brought the initial wakefulness, but the care filled moment was turned into an opportunity for praise. "Giving Thanks" will settle the anxieties of our hearts by putting the Lord back into the center of our universe where He belongs!

Application

If there are worries or stresses in your life today, turn them over to the Lord by giving Him thanks.

My "Thankfulness List"- Making a written list of 100 things for which I am thankful has been used greatly of God in my heart this month. I can truly say He has given me an "attitude of gratitude!"

Thought for the Day

Psalms 100:1-5

A Psalm of praise

(1) Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.

(2) Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.

(3) Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

(4) Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.

(5) For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

As I sit here on Thanksgiving morning, I am filled with gratitude for my life. I am fully aware though that the blessings I enjoy are only because of my Lord Jesus Christ. He has enabled me to know God and serve Him. I am convinced that there are two things about God that I must be aware of and rest in if I can fully experience His presence and blessing.

These two things are that 1.God is Great, and 2. God is Good! If God were not great, He would be incapable of bringing His good will for me to pass. If God were not good, His immense power could not be trusted to do that which is best for me. Power without goodness is corrupting, and goodness without power is incapable of fully expressing itself. I am grateful that my Lord is both Great and Good as the earliest childhood prayer that I was taught reminded me each night. Praise Him this Thanksgiving for He alone is worthy!

Application

"God is great, God is good let us thank Him for this food, amen!"

Magnify God Through Thankfulness

ThanksLiving. Sunday morning sermon series for the month of November. Thankfulness is the key to contentment!

Thought for the Day

Psalms 69:30-31

(30) I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.

(31) This also shall please the LORD better than an ox or bullock that hath horns and hoofs.

Once again we see the importance of thankfulness to our relationship with God. David describes thanksgiving here as "magnifying" the Lord and "pleasing" Him more than many sacrifices. We can not overestimate the importance of gratitude to as successful Christian life. I believe if we would focus on this one grace and determine to grow in this area through concentration and focus that we would experience a great burst of enthusiasm in our walk with Christ. Thanksgiving magnifies Him; it makes Him big to everyone around us, and this is exactly what He deserves. He is worthy!

Application

Magnify the Lord today through thanksgiving. Let everyone know that you appreciate all the good that He has allowed to come your way today.

The Debt of Gratitude

Thought for the Day

Psalms 50:14 Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High:

We tend to want to offer God our money, or time, or songs, or whatever; but what He is truly desirous of is our heart. The "vows" God wants "paid" from us is simply that we would offer Him thanks from the heart. I will continue to "pay my vows" to the Lord this month as I compile my list of 100 things for which I am thankful. I am surrounded by two things each day: things that can cause me to grumble, and things that can cause me to give thanks. The amazing thing that I am discovering is that they are both the same things; it is simply my perspective that determines their worth.

Application

As you thank the Lord for the things in your life today, remember that you are paying to Him a great debt of gratitude!

The Testimony of Praise

Thought for the Day

Psalms 18:49 Therefore will I give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and sing praises unto thy name.

Before I was a Christian one of the things that most impressed me about the few people I knew who professed to follow Christ was their positive and inspiring attitudes. There is just something attractive about a good spirit. In this psalm, David shows that the source of his blessings was God. He publicly gives thanks so that everyone would see that he served a God who was worthy of praise. I believe if people would see in us more thankfulness and praise rather than complaining and negativism that they would be attracted to our great Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!

Application

Give thanks to the Lord today, not just in private, but publicly where all can see His greatness. A simple bowing of the head in prayer over a meal in a restaurant is a great way of demonstarting our love for the Lord and showing forth His praise.

Be Specific

Thought for the Day

Philippians 1:3

I thank my God upon every remembrance of you...

I am well on my way to completing my list of 100 things for which I am thankful. One thing that has become clear to me through this process is that the more specific I become, the more gratitude I feel. For example, initially I wrote that I am thankful for "friends", but it was not until I began to write down the names of specific friends that my heart became full of memories of past events that made me truly grateful. This must be what Paul had in mind when he wrote that he thanked the Lord "upon every remembrance". Specific details seem to arouse a much greater sense of gratitude than generalities.

Application

Begin your own thanksgiving list today if you haven't already and continue to get specific. A good dose of gratitude is needed today in our world about as much as anything else we could have.

Thought for the Day

1 Thessalonians 5:18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

Last week I began a series of Sunday morning messages aimed at reviving the spirit of thankfulness in my life and our church. I believe the root cause of most of our problems as individuals and as a nation is due to the loss of gratitude. We see in Romans 1:21 that ingratitude has led to entire cultures turning away from God. When we fail to acknowledge the blessings in our lives and come completely wrapped up in our problems or misfortunes, we are well on the road to many greater pains and anguish.

I have challenged our church to make a list of at least 100 things for which they are thankful. I believe the simple act of "counting our blessings" will result in a great awakening of joy and gladness!

Application

Begin your own thanksgiving list today. Keep it close by and when you are tempted to murmur write a couple of things down that you have to be thankful for. It will amaze you how gratitude will redirect your thoughts and emotions.

Thought for the Day

Philippians 4:4-5 Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice. (5) Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.

What a wonderful day of rejoicing yesterday at Fellowship. It was a great joy to witness two new believers follow Christ in baptism. But our rejoicing must extend beyond the walls of our corporate place of worship. Paul said we are to "rejoice always", this means at all times and in all places. Sunday is simply the "huddle" and plays are not run in the huddle. It is when a team breaks the huddle and steps up to the line that the real action takes place. This is true in our Christian lives as well. "Let your moderation be known" today! "The Lord is at hand" He is available to all who will come to Him and receive His offer of mercy.

Confessing God's Greatness

Nehemiah 9:3, 6 And they stood up in their place, and read in the book of the law of the LORD their God one fourth part of the day; and another fourth part they confessed, and worshipped the LORD their God... (6) Thou, even thou, art LORD alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee.

It is wonderful how the people of Israel in Nehemiah chapter nine attribute confession to worship. We typically think of confession as having to do with admitting sin, and although it can have to do with sin, it is much broader. Literally "to confess" means "to tell the truth". When we confess our sin, we are telling the truth about our sin. When we make confession of our God, we are telling the truth about Him.

Worship then is telling the truth about who God is, what He has done, and what He is capable of doing!

Application

Make a confession today! Think about Who God is, what He has done, and what He is capable of doing. Write it down and then confess it with your mouth to Him and to others. As the Psalmist said, "My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad." (Psalm 34:2)

The LORD Is My Shepherd

Psalm 23:1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

So often we allow other people or things to become our satisfaction in life. This is not how we were wired by God to possess happiness. It is only when He is our all that we experience complete satisfaction.

This thought was brought out wonderfully by Ray Steadman,

"Because the Lord is my shepherd, I do not lack anything. He satisfies my needs. That is the place where God wants to bring us. He wants us to be independently dependent upon Him, to need Him alone. It struck me as I was studying this psalm that there are really only two options in life. If the Lord is my shepherd, then I shall not want; but if I am in want, then it is obvious that the Lord is not my shepherd. It is that simple. If emptiness, loneliness, despair, and frustration exist in our lives, then the Lord is not our shepherd. Or if anyone or anything else is shepherding us, we are never satisfied. If our vocation shepherds us, then there is restlessness and feverish activity and frustration. If education is our shepherd, then we are constantly being disillusioned. If another person is our shepherd, we are always disappointed, and ultimately we are left empty. If drug abuse is our shepherd, then 'we are wasted' as one rock artist said recently. But if the Lord is our shepherd, David says, we shall not want."

Application

Where are you dissatisfied in your life today? This is an indication of your need for shepherding in this area by the Lord Jesus. Bow your head and surrender that burden to Him right now.

He Will Make All Things New

He is going to make all things new! This is more meaningful to me than anything else. I do not know about you, but I have never really been satisfied with this life. I have found myself frustrated, I have found myself hemmed in, and I have never been able to accomplish all that I have wanted to accomplish. I've never been the man I've wanted to be. I've never been the husband I've wanted to be. I've never been the father I've wanted to be. And I've never preached the sermon I've wanted to preach. I just do not seem to have arrived. All accomplishments seem to have a blot on them.

But He says to me, as He says to you, "I am going to make all things new. You are going to be able to start over again." I am waiting for that day when all things are going to be new and I can start over. Have you ever stopped to think about the potential of starting out all new again, of learning all over again, and never ceasing but going on into eternity? Oh, the potential and capability of man! Yonder at the Tower of Babel, God said, "I had better go down there, or nothing will be withheld from man" (see Gen. 11:5-7). It was very foolish for some scientists and preachers to say that man could not go to the moon; I think he is going farther than that. Man is a clever being which God has made. Death ends his potential down here, but with eternity ahead of him, oh, the prospects a saved man has!

We see here the glorious prospect of all things made new. We can start over, and there will never be an end to our growth. Remember that of Christ it is said, "Of the increase of His government and peace there shall be no end" (see Isa. 9:7). There is constant growth and development. Just think of the prospect of that for the future. Someday I am going to know something; today I don't, but I will then.

Application

As Christian we have the prospect of an amazing future in Heaven. Stop today and Read Revelation 21 and ask the Lord to make it real to your heart by faith!

Thought for the Day

Psalms 22:27-28 All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee. (28) For the kingdom is the LORD'S: and he is the governor among the nations.

Our commission as a church is to share the good news of Christ with all the world. Although one of our great motivations for doing this is that others may receive the forgiveness and eternal acceptance that comes through a relationship with Jesus Christ, I believe our greatest motivation should be that Christ may receive their worship! We are told that when people turn to the LORD the result is worship. This is the rightful place that Christ deserves in the hearts and lives of men and women. He is the governor -- leader and ruler among the nations.

Application

As you look for opportunities to speak to others about Christ today, remember that we are in reality seeking worshipers for His glory and all other benefit received is simply added blessing!

Ludicrous Love

What kind of love would cause someone to spend the rest of his life running in the fields chasing grungy sheep? What kind of love would cause one to yield the most basic liberty of choosing the clothing that he would want to wear for the day? What kind of love would nudge someone to accept the most extreme sacrifice of allowing another to tie him up and carry him to his martyrdom?

Jesus laid out before Peter what would seem to a careless observer a most bleak and pathetic future life, and then put the option of accepting it before Him with the command to "follow" Him. In other words, "Here it is Peter, this is what following me will mean to you--sacrifice, hardship, difficulty, obscurity; and by the way, ultimately it will cost you your very life. Now do you want to do it? If so, follow me!"

This kind of love is ludicrous. It is beyond reasonable comprehension. It is absurd! But to a soul who has caught a glimpse of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ, it is simply "reasonable." This is the love that causes individuals every day to sacrifice their finances, time, and labor to further God's kingdom on this earth. It just makes sense when you come to fully accept the undeniable truth that any life that we have is only ours because it was given to us by our God, and one day we will stand before Him and give account of our use of that life.

Application

Look for an opportunity to sacrifice for Christ this week something that just doesn't make sense and experience the deep joy of God's smile within your very soul!

Gathering as One

What a magnificent time we experienced together yesterday at Fellowship Baptist Church in Thonotosassa. Our worship service was full (522 in attendance) and so was our hearts. The fellowship, music, guests, and hearing the Word all came together to bring us corporately into the presence of God. Praise Him for the one who was saved as well!

Thought for the Day

Nehemiah 8:1, 6
(1) And all the people gathered themselves together as one man into the street that was before the water gate; and they spake unto Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded to Israel.
(6) And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the LORD with their faces to the ground.

To me there is nothing more powerful than gathering with a group of believers around God's Word to worship Him. The people "gathered themselves as one man". This shows the voluntary unity that is required for corporate worship to take place. It can not be coerced or manipulated, it must come from the heart. Beyond the voluntary unity, we see the collective desire to hear God's Word. There was no "force feeding" here; it was pure desire to hear what their God had to say to them. Finally there was humble worship. Their cups became so full that they poured them out in adoration to their God. Oh that this would be our normal experience as we gather each week as a church body to worship "the great God."

Application
So often we do not receive a blessing from our corporate worship because we do not prepare ourselves in advance.
Pray each day this week for the coming Lord's day at your church. Ask God to prepare your own heart to receive from Him and to be a blessing to Him and to those who will be present.

The Stranger Who Moved In

I was sent this recently...

Years after I was born, my Dad met a stranger who was new to our small town. From the beginning, Dad was fascinated with this enchanting newcomer and soon invited him to live with our family. The stranger was quickly accepted and was around from then on.

As I grew up, I never questioned his place in my family. In my young mind, he had a special niche. My parents were complementary instructors: Mom taught me good from evil, and Dad taught me to obey. But the stranger... he was our storyteller. He would keep us spellbound for hours on end with adventures, mysteries and comedies.

If I wanted to know anything about politics, history or science, he always knew the answers about the past, understood the present and even seemed able to predict the future! He took my family to the first major league ball game. He made me laugh, and he made me cry. The stranger never stopped talking, but Dad didn't seem to mind.

Sometimes, Mom would get up quietly while the rest of us were shushing each other to listen to what he had to say, and she would go to the kitchen for peace and quiet. (I wonder now if she ever prayed for the stranger to leave.)

Dad ruled our household with certain moral convictions, but the stranger never felt obligated to honor them. Profanity, for example, was not allowed in our home - not from us, our friends or any visitors. Our long time visitor, however, got away with four-letter words that burned my ears and made my dad squirm and my mother blush. My Dad didn't permit the liberal use of alcohol but the stranger encouraged us to try it on a regular basis. He made cigarettes look cool, cigars manly, and pipes distinguished. He talked freely (much too freely!) about sex. His comments were sometimes blatant, sometimes suggestive, and generally embarrassing..

I now know that my early concepts about relationships were influenced strongly by the stranger. Time after time, he opposed the values of my parents, yet he was seldom rebuked... And NEVER asked to leave.

More than fifty years have passed since the stranger moved in with our family. He has blended right in and is not nearly as fascinating as he was at first. Still, if you could walk into my parents' den today, you would still find him sitting over in his corner, waiting for someone to listen to him talk and watch him draw his pictures.

His name???

We just call him "TV." I really fear what his grandkids will be like.
He has a wife now...we call her "Computer."
Their first child is "Cell Phone."
Second child "I Pod."

I know this may seem over the top by some and a bit more preachy than my typical blogs, but it hits home with me. I have long felt that the TV or mass media has been the single greatest human factor to the decay of our civilization. Immediately after I was saved, someone stole my TV and for 10 years I did not have one, nearly my entire 20's. That is the decade I really learned the Bible and God molded my life into a servant for Him. I wonder where I would be today if I had owned a TV for that decade??? I'm just saying that I am sure my focus would not have been there as it was.

Wisdom You Can Count On

(6) Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect (mature, growing): yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought (nothing):

(7) But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:

It is such an encouragement to know that I have in my Bible the wisdom of God that is so far superior to anything that man can come up with on his own. The wisdom of man always comes to an end. Todays breakthrough is always in need of tomorrow's correction or update.. Whether it be books, technology, sports strategies, or even relationship advice, eventually man's wisdom will be found lacking. The wisdom of God is not so. It has been around from before the world and is still going strong today and will do so into eternity. I am so thankful that the truth that brought me into a personal relationship with God 27 years ago is still the truth today! There is no need for revision, update, or clarification: Christ died for my sins according to the scriptures!

Reaffirm your faith in God's Word today. If you are searching for answers to issues in life, look no further than the pages of the Bible. All other advice will eventually run out of gas, God's Word is forever!

Judged of No Man

1 Corinthians 2:15

But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.

So many times as followers of Jesus Christ our actions and even motives can be called into question. It is frustrating and often painful to be "mis" judged by others. But when we are walking in the Spirit and seeking to be led by God, we have His promise of "divine discernment". Spiritual decisions may be called into question, but that is only because others may not have the spiritual insight needed to properly "judge." We must always remember, "If we please the Lord, it does not matter whom we displease."

Application
If you are facing unfair judgment, continue to yield your heart and motives to the Lord. One of the hardest lessons in life to learn is to allow the Lord to be your judge. Often it is the struggle we face that proves the potential of our actions.

Nehemiah 5:19

Think upon me, my God, for good, according to all that I have done for this people.

Here we see Nehemiah, ever the prayer warrior, calling out to God for consideration and comfort. In Psalm 139:17-18, the psalmist said, How precious also are thy thoughts to me, O God! how great is the sum of them! (18) If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand...

With all the frustration going on in Nehemiah's life, the attacks of his enemies, the discouragement of the people he was trying to lead, and the selfishness of the rulers around him; he turned to the Lord for understanding and comfort. In other words, he was saying, You know my heart Lord; You know why I am doing this; keep me in your thoughts, Lord! Have you reminded God to "think about you" lately? It is not that He needs a reminder, but He loves to hear the dependent cry of His people to Him.

Application
Lord, remember me for good today. I need to be aware of Your awareness of me. As long as you are pleased with me today, that is all that matters.

Our Weeping World

I watched this video today of Fernando Ortega performing "Give Me Jesus" as a tribute to Ruth Graham, and as I did it once again reminded me of the sadness of this world. As I looked at the pictures of Billy and Ruth Graham in their youth it reminded me that the best of lives will one day end in death and it saddened me as I thought of my own mortality. I have often been brought to tears just thinking about the weight of sorrow and suffering that so many endure in this life. If I am not careful it can simply become overwhelming to me. If it were not for my belief in the resurrection of Jesus Christ I sometimes think I would be crushed by sadness.

Life is one of the saddest things that can be endured. This must be evident to any person who is willing to face this thought with honesty. We try to find so many things to occupy our mind and heart, but in the end the ultimate reality and sadness of life is death and it awaits us all. That is unless we are resting in the finished work of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! In my moments of overwhelming sadness, I remind myself of the hope of real life in Christ. This is my hope! This is my expectation! And it is my passion for living! I feel sorry for anyone whose life is no more than getting up each day and chasing the next mind numbing fancy that they encounter. In the end there is only one honest reality and that is Jesus Christ! I pray for all my friends that they will truly "rise" in the morning when this shadow we call life fades away into that eternal reality of life in Christ.

Application
Do you truly know Jesus Christ today. Are you sure enough of that relationship to stake your eternity upon it? If not, anything that stands in the way of settling that question is your enemy. Run to the refuge of Christ and cry out "Give me Jesus" alone! If you are a follower of Jesus Christ then realize the message of hope that you possess and be bold in sharing it today.

(2) And he spoke before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews? will they fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they make an end in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish which are burned? (3) Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he shall even break down their stone wall. 4:14 And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.

Have you ever noticed how people we have not seen in a while sometimes pop up into our lives just as we are about to take a new step of faith? They come with:

misinformation,
discouraging words, and
bad advice

In times like these we must "remember the Lord". Faith always has its foes; whether it is a small decision or a major life change, we must ground our decisions firmly on God's Word, not the voices of distant acquaintances.

Application
Scrutinize every piece of advice against the counsel of God's Word. It is the only true source of absolute certainty.

The Glory of Weakness

1 Corinthians 1:26-31 (26) For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: (27) But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; (28) And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: (29) That no flesh should glory in his presence. (30) But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: (31) That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

If another human being were to describe us in words such as "foolish", "weak", "base" (on the bottom), "despised", and "not"; I think it would cause most any of us to want respond and defend ourselves against such "attacks." But in the context above, it is the Lord describing us in such terms (there goes our self-esteem). How can this be? Why would he describe us in this way? This is His description of where He found us and what our life represents apart from Him. It is not until we come to the end of self and realizes our complete need of Christ that the Lord can lift us up and use us to confound (amaze) the "wise" and "mighty."

When we come to the end of self then Jesus becomes "to us" wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption. In other words, "When Christ becomes all we have, we find that He is all we truly need." And what is the result? We glory in the Lord or make our boast of Him!

Application
Lord, I confess to you today my self love that often pops its ugly head up and expects something from others that only you truly deserve. Help me to realize more fully that I am nothing without you and that the realization of this will serve to make me completely satisfied with you and the life and circumstances that surround me each day. Truly life is a gift, thank You for it. In Jesus name, Amen!

I Need A Break

Thought for the Day

Nehemiah 4:23 So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard which followed me, none of us put off our clothes, saving that every one put them off for washing.

I think we would all prefer life to be "warm and fuzzy" all the time without any pressure or strain. I know I look for times of ease where I can just kick back and not worry about anything, and although those times are great and refreshing pit stops along the way, those times are not the norm especially when you are busy with work, responsibilities and family.

More times than not we find ourselves like Nehemiah and his workers when they were midway through their building project in Jerusalem. The Bible tells us that they did not even have time to stop and take off their clothes when they needed to rest, only occasionally for washing. Wow, that's pretty busy. Sometimes that is just the way life is. Sometimes you just have to find the inner reserves to get through the day. Fortunately for followers of Christ, we are promised His strength. Jesus said that without Him we can do nothing (John 15:5). As a vine abides in a branch for its sustenance, so we must rest in the abundant supply of our Lord.

I love this old poem I found in a biography several years ago:

Be Strong!

We are not here to play, to dream, to drift;

We have hard work to do, and loads to lift.

Shun not the labor, take it, 'tis God's gift.

Be Strong!

Application
Confess to God today your own weakness and inability. Ask Him to give you the strength to accomplish the tasks of today. Come to him fully aware of your complete reliance on Him, remembering, that He said, "without me, you can do nothing."

Fight For Your Family

We must never forget that a key component of our service for the Lord is the care and protection of our families. As Nehemiah was reorganizing their defenses against the attack of their enemies, he reminded the people to take care of their families and even rearranged their places of duty so they could be nearer their homes.

I believe this is a great lesson for all of us. Our families need to be given a high place of consideration as we organize and commit our lives to our various responsibilities. Sometimes I have found that it is the overcommitments which my kids make that can put a strain on the family as well. A family is a team and we must all work together for the same goal and in the same direction.

This by no means implies that our families should become an excuse from shunning our legitimate Christian responsibilities, but they should definitely be considered. It has been well said that "Our work for the Lord should begin first in the home, but it should not end there." God never gives us competing responsibilities, we must have wisdom to understand what belongs, what does not, and how to balance these things in our lives.

Application

Take a look at your schedule today; what is there that does not need to be? What is out of order of priority, and what is lacking that should be in place? Ask God for wisdom in adjusting your life to better reflect His priority of family.

Nehemiah 3:1-2 (1) Then Eliashib the high priest rose up with his brethren the priests, and they builded the sheep gate; they sanctified it, and set up the doors of it; even unto the tower of Meah they sanctified it, unto the tower of Hananeel. (2) And next to him builded the men of Jericho. And next to them builded Zaccur the son of Imri.

In this chapter some form of the expression "next to him" is used 28 times. This shows us the importance of unity and cooperation in accomplishing anything of lasting value. Ten gates and two and a half miles of walls were completely restored in just 52 days. These walls and gates had laid waste for nearly one hundred years, but when the people developed a "mind to work" and "strengthened their hands" for this good work God was able to accomplish the impossible through them.

Forgotten Heroes

Thought for the Day

1 Samuel 30:24 For who will hearken unto you in this matter? but as his part is that goeth down to the battle, so shall his part be that tarrieth by the stuff: they shall part alike.

As I watched this video that was put together by the American Legion, it reminded me of this passage of Scripture. The army of Israel was heading into battle, the Lord reminds them that a war cannot be fought without a tremendous amount of support. His conclusion was that those who stayed behind keeping up with "the stuff" (all the details of life, families, etc.) were to be honored on an equal footing with those who "go down to battle".

Our military families sacrifice so much for the sake of our country. We are currently in the longest war in American history with soldiers who have made multiple deployments. Each of these deployments exact great cost from the families that remain behind. I could not imagine my children and wife having to pay such a dear price. Sadly, they are seldom recognized and little appreciated. I for one no longer want to be negligent of recognizing their sacrifice. Our position on the wars is not the issue, our love and gratitude for others sacrifice on our behalf is!

Application
Lord, I repent of my unconcern and ingratitude for our military families. Help me to call attention to their service. Bless them today; meet their needs and use their difficult circumstances to draw them to Yourself.

True Worship

Thought for the Day

Ephesians 5:18-20 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; (19) Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; (20) Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

It is interesting and very insightful how the Bible contrasts being filled with the Spirit to being drunk with wine. They both are all consuming, affect every part of our being and highly noticeable. Three words that come to my mind as I look at this passage are meditation- "speaking to yourselves", variation- "psalms and hymns and spiritual songs", adoration- "making melody to the Lord", and appreciation- "giving thanks always".

A spirit filled life is deeply personal, fresh and expressive. A true heart is developed and nurtured as we allow Him to have complete control. This can only be accomplished by spending ample time allowing our heart to be captivated by His!

Application
Stop right now and ask the Lord to give you a song. God "inhabits the praises of His people", so as we sing from the heart to Him we can be sure that His presence will show up, but be prepared for Him to take control. He does not come as a mere participator in our worship experience, but as a the facilitator and leader.

Nehemiah 5:14 Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even unto the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor.

In the middle of Nehemiah's task of leading the people to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, he is faced with the problem of leaders who were taking advantage of the people. His response was decisive and clear. He rebukes the leaders, demands restoration and the work goes on.The thing that particularly jumps out at me is that Nehemiah held himself and those closest to him as examples of the correct behavior. Its been said that "more is 'caught' than is 'taught'." Nehemiah surely exemplified this principle.

With the election season in full swing and so many vying for office for a whole array of motives, it is so refreshing to occasionally see leaders who are willing to set the example not just in word, but in their personal lives. If authenticity and integrity are not restored in public office our current demise into mediocrity will only continue and accelerate.

Application
Pray for godly leaders who will exemplify integrity in their public and private lives. Stand behind those who do and count them as a rare blessing.

Two Sets of Hands

Nehemiah 2:18
Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king's words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work.

It takes two sets of hands to accomplish anything of significance in the kingdom of God. First we see the good hand of God resting upon Nehemiah. This is the hand of vision, power, and authority. This is what orders and compels us to the task ahead. Then there is the strengthened hands of the people following and supporting Nehemiah. These are the hands of willingness, submission, and faith. Without faith it is impossible to please God. In order for the Lord's desires to come to pass in our realm, His people must actively pursue Him in faith.

Application
Where are your hands today? Are they stuck in your pockets with a ho-hum attitude or are they actively engaged in advancing the kingdom of God in this world? Find where God is heading in your local church and strengthen your hands to get the job done.

Sometimes difficult circumstances and problems can tower over us to the point where we feel as if we are living in their shadows. David had experienced great difficulty in his life, but he understood the secret to getting out of their shadow was to "sing praise", "give thanks" and "remember the Lord" for who He is. "Weeping may endure for a night" - that is, it is a temporary thing for those who know the Lord. But "joy comes in the morning" - Magnify the Lord through praise and the shadows will disappear in the light of His overwhelming presence!

Application
Don't ignore your difficulties; they are real, but make a list of the character qualities of the Lord and allow this truth to be your source of real, abiding joy!

1 Corinthians 3:6-7

(6) I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.

(7) So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.

God's mathematics certainly seem strange. Paul says that he is nothing (0) and Apollos is nothing (0) but God is everything. This is an instance where 0+0=everything! So often we are trying to have our way and protect our interests to the point where we make such a mess that in the end there really is nothing. God says when we are willing to be nothing and those with whom we live and work have the same attitude then He can bless us with everything!

Although Nehemiah is most noted for his leadership skills; he is truly a man of great compassion. Although safe and secure in his position as the kings cup-bearer, he still showed great compassion and concern for his less fortunate countrymen back in the land of Israel. This compassion was the result of...

3. Rehearsing the Promises of God (8-10)

Blessed Assurance

Thought for the Day

2 Timothy 1:12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

I am speaking today at my Uncle Al's funeral. He was a bold witness for Christ and very influential in my life. I remember resisting his witness so often as a teen, but those words and lessons were in my heart and in His time God brought me to salvation through many witnesses of the Word.

In this passage, we see the testimony of one who had a firm confidence in His position with God. Paul says, "I know". This a statement of firm assurance. This is the faith my uncle possessed. I believe this kind of firm trust is the result of three things we see in this passage:

1. He was trusting in a Person, not a Pedigree. I know "whom" I have believed...

2. He was trusting in a Relationship, not a Religion. I know whom "I" have believed...

3. He was trusting from the Heart, not the Head. He is able to keep what I have "Committed"...

This is the basis of real faith, a personal real commitment of faith in the person of Jesus Christ! This is the faith my uncle possessed and that the Lord makes available to all who will receive Him.

Application
What are you trusting in today? Is your faith firmly planted in the saving work of Jesus Christ alone? Quit talking about faith in Christ, and started walking your faith in Christ.

God At Work

Thought for the Day

Philippians 1:6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

Three times in this chapter Paul mentions "confidence". Why is this. What made him so confident even in the midst of hardship and deprivation while in prison? It was because the object of his faith was not himself or his circumstances, but in the Lord. It was the Lord who "began" the good work of salvation in us and it is the Lord who will "perform" or complete it until Jesus comes. This is the confidence of every child of God that our heavenly Father never sleeps or takes a vacation. He is at it 24-7 accomplishing his purposes in us for His glory and our good.

Application
Whatever that difficulty is that is staring you in the face today, remember the Lord is still at work in you and will be faithful to finish it! Give Him praise and reintroduce yourself to His goodness and care for you.

What a blessed day we enjoyed at Fellowship hearing mission reports from Joe Triplett who just returned from two weeks in China and Jared Duncan who just returned from six weeks in Peru. We were truly moved with compassion for the needs of the world as we looked at these two nations through the eyes of our faithful members who came back with a first hand report of the work that the Lord is accomplishing in these places.

I pray that our faith will be increased in the days to come to advance the work of Christ in our world. The need is universal; Our God is mighty to save; and The provision has been given to us. Now we must be faithful to distribute God's provision generously!

Application
Continue to pray as to what the Lord desires to give to the work of missions through you this year. Remember, the Lord will always give more through us than He will ever give to us!

The Praise of God

Romans 2:29 For he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

After going through this entire chapter showing the futility of an insincere religious life, Paul comes to the conclusion that the true people of God are those whose spiritual lives are in Christ and from the heart. It is just amazing to me to consider God praising one of us. Does not He deserve all praise and honor and glory? Yet He is so pleased with worship that precedes from the heart and is based on a genuine relationship with Him that he praises us for it. This recognition of divine pleasure should compel each of us to examine the motive behind our life and service for Him. May I live each day truly seeking the "praise of God" rather than the "praise of man".

Application
Is the glory of God your chief aim? When its all been said and done that is all that will matter. Seek today the praise of God and rest in the enjoyment of His good pleasure on your life.

Perplexing Privilege

To think that the Creator of the universe would honor one of His fallen creatures is absolutely beyond my comprehension. What honor is there in me that has not proceeded from Him to begin with. God calls me by His grace, implants His divine nature within me, puts before me a world of opportunity like a giant candy store, and then honors me for simply following Him into service for that world which is my most reasonable service. WOW! simply incredible.

Father, May my life honor You today as I set out to serve others through You. I am most inadequate for this task, but incredibly grateful for the privilege.

He First Loved Us

Thought for the Day

John 14:20, 21 (20) At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. (21) He that hath my commandments, and keeps them, he it is that loves me: and he that loves me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

I read this excellent devotional thought by Ray Steadman today~

"If it takes love to obey, what produces love? That is the issue. If you see a Christian disobey Christ or you are tempted to disobey, what is it that will turn you around and make you obey? It is love. How do you produce love? What will make you love Him? This is what ties together verses 20 and 21. It is that basic secret of our identity that creates love-- the Spirit in us, releasing to us the love of Jesus, awakens love from us in return.

Remember how John puts it in his first letter: We love Him because he first loved us (1 John 4:19). Remembering this awakens love. Or, as Paul puts it in Romans 5, God has shed abroad his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, which is given to us (Romans 5:5). Therefore, the way to produce love is to remember who you are, to whom you belong, and who He is--His death, His resurrection, and His unity with you, His present indwelling life. You cannot remind yourself of that without experiencing a renewed sense of His love and feeling gratitude to Him for who He is and what He has done in your life. When that love begins to flow, then you are being motivated to obey."

Application
Outward obedience proceeds from inward satisfaction. Are you satisfied with Christ today? If not, this indicates a lack of reflection and meditation on who He is and all He has done for your good. Take some time to "think on these things".

The Gift of Children

Psalms 127:3 Lo, children are a heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.

What a contrast the Word of God is to the mentality of our society. As a country we are fast approaching the mark of 50,000,000 abortions since the Roe v. Wade decision by our Supreme Court in the early 70's. The joy and blessing that my children are to me is a daily confirmation of the fact that they are God's reward. Our kids do so much for us. When I look at them, I see me and they remind me of the happy times in my own childhood; their weaknesses remind me of my weaknesses and the need I have to continue to grow in the Lord; when I think of their future, it motivates me to pour myself into them that they might have the greatest potential to live to honor and please the Lord in whatever path they will ultimately follow.

I have received way more out of my kids than I have ever had to put into them. They are a gift, a joy, and a blessing! Thank you, Lord, for rewarding me with children!

Application
Hug your kids today and as you do, let it linger and drink in the joy of having been blessed by the Lord with them. If you don't have children of your own, come along side a family that does and be a blessing to them as they prepare their gifts for life.

God Speaks!

Thought for the day

Psalms 19:1-3 The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows his handiwork. (2) Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night shows knowledge. (3) There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.

Our God is truly the great communicator. Since the creation of the world He has continually sought to reveal Himself to man and to establish a personal relationship with him. Even when He sent His Son to the earth, He is called "the Word" of God, "the Light that lights every man that comes into the world" (John 1). If we are not hearing from God, it is not because He is not speaking; it is more than likely an issue of our hearing.

Elizabeth Barrett Browning wrote "Earth's crammed with heaven, and every common bush afire with God; but only he who sees takes of his shoes." God is found in the ordinary things of life if we are looking for Him. This is why trials come our way- to cause us to see beyond the ordinary- to cause us to catch a glimpse of the Eternal in the mundane. A wise man once said, “Do not seek water, for water is everywhere. Seek thirst, for without thirst, water has no value.”

Application
Stop for a minute and hit the pause button on your day. Open His Word and meditate on His Word. Quiet yourself before God and listen. He is always found by those who seek Him with their whole heart.

Leading for the Lord

2 Chronicles 19:6-7 And (Jehoshapaht) said to the judges, Take heed what you do: for you judge not for man, but for the LORD, who is with you in the judgment. (7) Wherefore now let the fear of the LORD be upon you; take heed and do it: for there is no iniquity with the LORD our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of gifts.

Its good to be reminded that my leadership roles in life, whether as a dad, pastor, employee or whatever is for the Lord, not for man. Since we are so surrounded by people, it is easy to give into the temptation of only seeing the value in our leadership in how it affects those people rather than how it affects the Lord. The desire for results can easily cause us to compromise principle and follow after that which "works" rather than that which is honorable.

I was told by a doctor friend of mine today how frustrating it can be at times to give good advice to people concerning their health and yet rarely see them take it. He then went on to say, "but they can never say that i did not warn them." This is what keeps him going, knowing that he is doing the right thing regardless of the outcome. This is a great lesson for all of us.

Application
Lord, Let me lead my family and ministry today for you, and not for man with the realization that ultimately it will bring even man the greatest good.

A Rest-filled Desire

I will be speaking God's Word this week at the Trinity Youth Camp in Keystone Heights, FL. I am praying and trusting the Lord for fruit that will remain. I am thankful for this great privilege.

Thought for the Day

2 Chronicles 15:15 And all Judah rejoiced at the oath: for they had sworn with all their heart, and sought him with their whole desire; and he was found of them: and the LORD gave them rest round about.

During troubling times in their nation, there were those in Israel who lived with peace in their hearts and rest in their souls because the Lord gave it to them. Joy, peace, and rest are continually available to the people of God from God Himself! The key to this rest is when they "sought Him with their whole desire". It is not an outward conformity to religious observances or church traditions that brings rest, but a heartfelt desire to please the Lord and walk in His ways.

Application
Where do you look for rest? Anything less than seeking it form the Lord with your whole desire will leave you empty. Examine your desires today by recognizing what occupies your mind the most today and turn that care to the Lord.

Our Trustworthy God

Thought for the day

Genesis 40:23 Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgot him.

Once again we see Joseph "forgotten" by man. It seems everyone he counted on let him down: his dad, brothers, Potipher, and now Pharaoh's butler. Psalms 146:3 tells us to "put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help." It then goes on to say in verse 5 that "Happy is he that has the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God:" Man may fail you whether purposely or otherwise, but the Lord is the only true refuge that can be totally depended upon.

Application
Remember "the best of men are men at best". If you are being disappointed by someone in your life today, take them down from the exalted position to which you have elevated them and reserve that place for God alone- He is the only one worthy of it!

What's in Your Treasure Chest?

Thought for the Day

Matthew 6:19-21 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: (20) But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: (21) For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

When I think about treasure it brings to mind images of a chest just overflowing with gold or other precious metals. It is something to be sought after and something to be valued and enjoyed as well. Jesus tells us to be careful what we value; what we seek after, what we long to enjoy. Our value system will direct our heart and our heart will ultimately direct our eternity.

In Romans 2:5, Paul speaks of another treasure; he describes God's wrath as being "treasured" up to one day be unleashed on those who reject the "goodness" of God's long-suffering and forbearance. Basically, he is saying the same thing Jesus said in Matthew 6, that our life will be rewarded for good or for ill. When we are living out the Christian life we are laying up the treasure of God's goodness and eternal joy. When we are living out the flesh life, we are laying up the wrath of God's judgment and disfavor. So, what is in your treasure chest today? What are you laying up today that you will one day meet up with in eternity?

Application

Take a few minutes and ask God to show you your true value system today. Evaluate your choices today in light of God's eternal value system realizing that all that is "laid up" for His glory will bring the reward of His eternal joy! Repent of those things that will ultimately rob you of the joyful blessing of God's favor and glory on your life.

Living for the Least of These

Matthew 25:40

And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

I thank the Lord for the missions outreach of our church. Of all the things that may attract our attention, I believe there is none as dear to the heart of God as the preaching of the gospel to the spiritually needy of the world. Each day we are privileged to partner with servants of the Lord who are reaching out to those in our world who may otherwise have not known of the kindness of Christ our Savior.

It is such an honor for me to realize that every person that I have a part in reaching for Christ is viewed by our Lord as if I have personally displayed kindness to Him. What a great way to worship Him, by serving others! Remember, we are His hands and feet to those who have not yet seen Him face to face!

Application
Open your eyes wide today and look for at least one person that you can serve in the name of Jesus. Give them a witness of Him and pray that the Lord will save them today.

Needed Rest

Photo: Cheryl and I enjoyed a wonderful week away at Oasis, a retreat for pastors and their wives hosted by Pastor Jimmy Crocket (yellow shirt) and his wife Joy in Hendersonville, TN. It was great to spend some time with Charles and Sharon Shoemaker (right) and other friends as well.

Thought for the day

Mark 6:30-31 (30) And the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught. (31) And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.

Many times I have heard the phrase, "If you don't come apart, you will come apart." Simply put, we all need times of recreation and refreshment. The disciples had returned to Jesus excited about the work they had been able to accomplish through Him. Jesus, in His wisdom and insightfulness, could see the potential of burnout looming on the horizon and encouraged His followers to take a break.

So often we see great nobility in pushing ourselves to the limits for the work of the Lord or even in our every day pursuits and responsibilities. Although work is certainly noble and commended by the Lord, rest is an equally important part of a healthy and godly life. It is during these times of "coming apart" that we can refocus our attention and gather the needed strength and resources to move forward in life with optimal joy and purpose.

Application
Be sure to take time alone to gather yourself and your focus on the Lord. Plan some alone time today and some extended time in the near future. If you feel like you just don't have time, remember, "If you don't come apart, you will come apart"!

The Honor of Sacrifice

Thought for the day

Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

It was Patrick Henry at St. John's Church in Richmond, Va. who uttered the now famous statement, "Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!"

In my Christian life, I know not what course others may take, but as for me, I choose to serve the Lord with my whole heart! The presentation of my life to Jesus my King as a living sacrifice is simply reasonable when I consider the great mercy that He has shown to me. Living for the Lord is not a burden in any measure; it is the greatest privilege that I have. To think that I can live in united purpose with the Creator is overwhelming to me. Thank you, God!

Application
Meditate today on the gift of life that has been given to you in Christ. Realize the great mercy He has shown in saving you and then respond in worship to Him by presenting yourself as His living sacrifice.

Who is God Blessing Because of You?

Genesis 39:5 And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of the LORD was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.

Joseph is one of the great figures of Scripture. Twenty-five percent of the content of the Book of Genesis is about him. When we come to realize that Joseph is perhaps the greatest type of Christ in the Old Testament then we can understand why the Father would devote so much ink to him. God blessed the house of the Egyptian- Why? Why would God let His blessing rest on the house of a pagan, idol worshiping Egyptian? The obvious answer is for Joseph's sake. Joseph like us is the salt of the earth. We are people of influence that have great power for good or ill in the lives of those with whom we touch each day. We have the potential to bring God's blessing to so many people, as we share Christ with them and do our best to be a testimony for Jesus it is inevitable that their lives will be enriched because of us. Put your name in the blank: "and the Lord blessed so and so for ? 's sake."

Application
Who will God bless today because of you? You shall be a blessing, this is God's desire for us. Look for someone today whose life can use the blessing of God and be that blessing to them.

The Knowledge of God

Great day with God's people at Fellowship yesterday. It is always a blessing to see people profess Christ as Lord and Savior and to see others make commitments to become growing followers of Jesus Christ!

Thought for the day

Romans 1:28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

To know God is the highest privilege that we can enjoy as human beings. In John 17:3 Jesus said that knowing God is the essence of eternal life. I look back with tremendous gratitude and thankfulness to the day when I received Christ as my Lord and Savior. I have been changed from a sin loving, self-destructive person to a child of God made over in His image! This verse really brings out the sadness of a person who is pushing God out of his or her life to the point where he or she doesn't even want to think about Him. Unfortunately, this I believe is where we find ourselves heading in our nation today. Society is attempting to remove the knowledge of God out of every area of life possible with the hopes of one day containing Him within the four walls of the worship house alone. I am committed to opposing this trend by faithfully proclaiming the name and knowledge of God to anyone who will hear.

Application
Tell someone about Jesus today; speak up for Him at every opportunity. It is for the good of each person individually and to our nation as a whole!

God's Amazing Grace

Thought for the day

Romans 5:17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)

As believers we are able to overcome sin and reign in life through the gift of righteousness that is given us in Christ Jesus. There is no cause to live a defeated second rate existence as a child of God. God's grave is truly amazing!

Spend a few moments worshiping the Lord for the gift of His grace until in your heart you truly understand that it is amazing!.
